The city of Lorain is notable for its deindustrialized economy, formerly being home to the American Ship Building Company Lorain Yard, Ford Motor Company Lorain Assembly Plant, and United States Steel Corporation's steel mill on the city's south side. The city faces many similar issues to other Rust Belt cities, including population decline and urban decay. Poverty in the city is above the national average. It's a place like this that has forged the mentality of St Vincent St Mary Sophomore guard Seth Wilson. Wilson who hails from Lorain is a true shooting guard in the sense that he can truly get his shot off whenever he wants, and on this particular Saturday night Wilson surely had it going. In a head to head match up with Cleveland Central Catholic, Seth poured in 31 points in a hard fought win. Head coach Dru Joyce talked about him and the team's performance. The Ironmen were big down low and at times gave the Irish trouble as they went on a 3rd quarter run going up by as much as 8.
"We gave them alot of second chance points, sent em to the free throw line, and their big's were just out working us."
"We were trying to get the big guy out the middle we noticed that he like to try to block alot of shots, we just wanted to keep movement...most teams don't wanna guard for more than 10 or 12 secs, if we can make em guard for more than 20 secs we can get any shot we want.
When asked about Seth's performance Joyce prasied his young guard but also spoke about his shortcomings despite his greatness.
"He did alot of good stuff, I had to you yank him a little bit in the 3rd quarter to make sure he understood when we got down that it ain't about him. We gotta continue to play as a group...he's still got a long way to go, but when he get's there he's gonna be very, very special. Coach Joyce loves what he's sees in Seth, but he seems to be even more in love with who Wilson could become. When asked about his development, what he's seen from his freshman year to the present he talks about him learning a fundamentally more sound game.
"He's comin around. When you grow up, and it's always been about give Seth the ball and let him go, that's a mindset ...that's hard for a guy to give up because that's what he's been use to, but at this level it ain't about that. You're playing some very good teams and 1 on 5 ain't gone work. Seth in that regard is making strides to become that total elite player. On this night not only did he score, he had some nice assists, and he helped play great team defense. When asked about what the keys to success for the night were he stated that Coach Dru had the plan:
"Coach Dru put together a great game plan, and we followed it."
When we asked Seth about his own development, he said that he's became a better teammate and is continuing to work to get better "I became a better defender, a better teammate, and I've worked on my shot more." We know Seth is young and has work to do, but we also know that this kid has a boat load of talent, and confidence. Hence our reference to "Steel in his veins" or should I say his reference. Seth is constantly shouting out his hometown of Lorain aka "Steel city" and when we asked him about his 30 point performance tonight he again reiterated his stance rather amusingly. He also talked about his confidence:
"My confidence comes from my shooting coach Phil Argento. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take and that's the way I think about it.
As for the city of Lorain aka Steel City "
"That's where I'm from 440 Lorain, that's stuff we do. 30 balls that's what we do on a daily"
There you have it, Steel In His Veins. Stay tuned
