As little kids Garfield Heights sophomore guard Meechie Johnson and his younger cousin Sonny Johnson Jr dreamed of playing alongside each other. This season that dream became true. On this particular night the duo showcased what dreams could be like as they hosted Euclid on their home court. While Meechie got off to a slow start scoring wise, he seemed intent on getting his teammates involved as he dished off some beautiful cross court passes for assists, a few of which found his childhood teammate Sonny Jr. Sonny who is avg 15 ppg this season hit several three's, two of them in the 1st half finished with 10 pts and 4 assts. When asked about playing on varsity as a freshman, and playing along side his older cousin Sonny told us that he's feeling rather comfortable and that it's been a dream that the two has shared since they were kids. Coach Sonny Johnson says that Sonny Jr. is doing good and "to have one of the best JR guards in the state guarding you the majority of the game I thought he showed he can play at this level" When asked about the duo's performance on the court together Sonny could only acknowledge that the two could potentially do great things. "Well they've been playing together a long time...they got a lot of chemistry together and it's only gonna get better. Meechie did not stay quiet long the rest of the night. he poured in 30 pts. 26 in the second half alone! When asked what he's doing to avoid the "sophomore slump" he stated "really just knowing that every time I step on the court I got a chip on my shoulder, everybody coming hard for me they wanna stop me....but I put in my hours in the gym, make sure I get my reps up and stay on my game" Coach Johsnon says that he's worked relentlessly to keep getting better. "Well he takes big shots and he makes big shots...he can handle the ball, and he's gotten stronger from last year, and we depend on him to make the big plays when it's needed" What these two will acclompish on the court has yet to fully be determined, but based off the small sample size we've seen already, it seems as though he sky's the limit. Stay tuned.
